Canadian Delegation Explores Opportunities in Space South Central
Canadian companies visiting SSTL’s HQ.
Following last year's renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the UK and Canada, which enhanced cooperation between the national space agencies, our Business Development Manager, Daniel Smith, had the opportunity to host a delegation from Canada, in collaboration with the UK Space Agency. The visit was perfectly timed, coinciding with their attendance at the Farnborough International Space Show (FISS).
Kicking off with a warm welcome at Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), the Canadian representatives were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the cutting-edge satellite technology that has made SSTL a global leader. Witnessing the innovative work being done here was truly inspiring, and it set the tone for the day.
Next, we whisked the delegation away to the University of Surrey's Space Centre, a world-renowned hub for small satellite activities and cost-effective space engineering. The comprehensive presentation and tour provided a fascinating glimpse into the pioneering work happening right here in our region.

Over lunch, we delved into lively discussions about potential collaborations and shared interests in space technology before meeting with the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium. The trade association is the longest established aerospace and defence trade body in the UK, providing support to some 300 companies located in southern England. Their CEO, Alan Fisher, highlighted the strength and diversity of our regional aerospace ecosystem.
This strategic networking extended well beyond our organised tour, with many promising connections made at FISS as well. The Canadian delegation, comprising representatives from five innovative companies—Connektica, Space Engine Systems, Calian, Galaxia, and Qoherent—had the chance to connect with UK businesses that perfectly matched their needs.
The visit has also paved the way for follow-up meetings with Space South Central, as we explore ways to support these Canadian companies in forging closer ties with the UK space industry.
Recognising the importance of international collaboration, Dan Smith, said:
I'm delighted we were able to host companies from Canada while showcasing our regional facilities and our unique combination of academic and industry links. The success of this Canadian delegation visit underscores the importance of our regional space ecosystem. As we continue to strengthen these international partnerships, I'm confident that Space South Central will play a pivotal role in building new UK-Canadian relationships."
