Funding Flash: December 2022

Each month, the South Coast Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (Space South Central) aims to bring together a curated list of the latest and best in funding opportunities, for businesses working in the space sector across the South East.

Innovation Exchange Challenge

Fund Name: Innovation Exchange challenge: Vehicle based internet access solutions for remote locations Deadline: Tuesday 17th January 2023

SSE Renewables Hydro is the owner and operator of eight hydro schemes in the north of Scotland, with a portfolio totalling 1,459MW, including 300MW of pumped storage and 750MW of flexible hydro. SSE Renewables Hydro invite solutions which enable the use of staff vehicles as reliable communications hubs for their operational staff to access the internet in remote locations.

Entrants to this competition must be:

Established businesses, start-ups, SMEs, academics or individual entrepreneurs UK based or have the intention to set up a UK base.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)

Deadline: Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2022 to 2023 Round 5 Deadline: Wednesday 25th January 2023

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme allows a UK registered business or not for profit organisation,to partner with a ‘knowledge base partner. This includes Universities, FE colleges and Catapult.

The KTP partnership brings new skills and the latest academic thinking into the business partner to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project. The associate has the opportunity to lead a strategic development within the business developing new skills and gaining valuable experience.

Satellite Connectivity for Autonomous Land Vehicles Safety

Fund Name: Satellite Connectivity for Autonomous Land Vehicles Safety Deadline: Thursday 23rd February 2023

The call “Connectivity for Autonomous land vehicles safety” aims to foster the development and showcase of innovative applications for the safe and secure deployment and management of autonomous and connected land vehicles by integrating satellite communications and other space assets with terrestrial and digital technologies.

ESA are offering funding and support to companies, both for business case assessment and for the development of new, space-based services. Our offer includes:

  • Technical & commercial guidance
  • Access to our network and partners
  • Use of the ESA brand for your service
  • Zero-equity funding

The activities will be 80% funded up to €200K per activity.

Finance for a Green Transition

Fund Name: Finance for Green Transition Deadline: Friday 24th February 2023

With climate change action increasingly urgent, regulation on sustainable finance being established, and a need for action by different players of the ecosystem, space data and technology can be an enabler of solutions for a green transition. This funding opportunity seeks to develop and assess business ideas for new space-enabled commercial services that help companies use space for acting on:

Greening Finance: understanding and mitigating the financial implications posed by the transition to a net-zero climate-neutral economy in companies and supply chains. Financing Green: supporting new investment decisions and opportunities to meet environmental targets and comply with international policies as part of green transition initiatives.

ESA will co-fund 80% of the acceptable cost, up to €200K, per awarded study.

5G for l'ART: Structural Monitoring and Risk Modelling

Fund Name: 5G for l'ART: Structural Monitoring and Risk Modelling Deadline: Friday 24th March 2023

The Outline Proposal needs to be submitted before 27 January 2022 and the Full Proposal needs to be submitted before 24 March 2023.

In the upcoming Announcement of Opportunity, economic operators are invited to propose either a Feasibility Study or a Demonstration Project addressing the theme of: Structural Monitoring and Risk Modelling. ESA are offering funding and support to companies, both for business case assessment and for the development of new, space-based services related to '​structural monitoring and risk modelling'. Our offer includes:

Technical & commercial guidance Access to our network and partners Use of the ESA brand for your service Zero-equity funding as summarised in the table presented below:

Project funding 50% for both a feasibility study (up to 200k euros) and demonstration project (up to 1 million euros).

Canada UK Commercialising Quantum Technology Programme

Fund Name: Canada UK Commercialising Quantum Technology Programme: CR&D Deadline: Wednesday 19th April 2023

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will work with the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) to invest a total of up to £6 million in innovation projects. These will enable the advancement of quantum technologies and their commercial use cases.

The aim of this competition is to strengthen collaborative research and development (CR&D) through Canadian and UK partnerships towards commercialising quantum technologies.

The proposals must demonstrate co-development, have a high potential for commercialisation, address a technological challenge and include a plan for future exploitation.
