Each month, Space South Central aims to bring together a curated list of the latest and best funding opportunities for businesses working in the space sector across the South East.

Thematic Call For 'Space For Infrastructure': Energy

Deadline: Friday, 5th January 2024

This call is part of the umbrella of the “Space for Infrastructure” thematic call for proposals. The second thematic area, Energy infrastructure, refers to the physical structures and networks that are used to transport and store energy.

ESA will support Feasibility Studies and Demonstration Projects under this ‘Announcement of Opportunities’:

  • Feasibility Studies allow successful teams to analyse, design and plan their intended service. 

  • Demonstration Projects allow successful teams to put their intended service into practice. Teams will test their service in the market by running a pilot with significant users and, by the end of the project, the service should be operational.

EPSRC programme grants - Full application: Winter 2023

Deadline: Tuesday, 9th January 2024

Programme grants provide flexible funding to world-leading research groups addressing significant major research challenges.

Funding should bring together the expertise of a team of internationally recognised scientists or engineers to focus on one strategic research theme.

EPSRC sees programme grants as critical mass investments, which cover a diverse engineering and physical sciences (EPS) portfolio. They benefit UK research through the concentration of high-performing talent.

Funding can be awarded for up to six years. You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for funding.

Call for proposals: Fly Your Satellite!

Deadline: Sunday, 21st January 2024

ESA invites university and other tertiary education student teams from an eligible state that are producing pico- or nanosatellites (CubeSats or PocketQubes) with educational objectives to propose their satellite for the fourth edition of the ‘Fly Your Satellite!’ (FYS) programme. 

For the current call, launch opportunities to LEO (Low Earth Orbit) compatible with ESA zero debris approach on orbital lifetime are envisioned.

Lunar Economy Applications

Deadline: Monday, 22nd January 2024

ESA is seeking promising business ideas for new service concepts that are empowered by Moonlight's lunar communication and navigation services and that address the needs of final customers in the lunar environment or down on Earth – as well as related short-term business opportunities.

Pre-announcement: Future underground dark matter science experiments

Opening Date: Thursday, 28th December 2023

Deadline: Friday, 2nd February 2024 

Apply for funding to deliver a dark matter science project at the Boulby Underground Laboratory. Science projects are anticipated to span the design, installation, commissioning, and operation phases.

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for grant funding and applicants must confirm that the proposed project can be hosted at the Boulby Underground Laboratory in advance of submission of the expression of interest (EoI).

The cost to Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for the project can be up to £10 million, over five years.

Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) Open Call for Innovation

Deadline: Wednesday 6th March 2024

The Open Call exists to offer suppliers the opportunity to submit their ideas to defence and security stakeholders.The Open Call is one of the funding competition mechanisms DASA uses to find proposals that address challenges faced by government stakeholders. It gives bidders the opportunity to present their ideas to defence and security stakeholders at any time, without waiting for a relevant Themed Competition.

Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) R&D programme

Deadline: Open until further notice.

The UK Space Agency is opening £15 million of calls to nurture innovation for satellite communications which will be delivered as part of the £60 million European Space Agency Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme, allocated to the UK’s C-LEO scheme.
