Funding Flash: January 2023

Each month, the South Coast Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (Space South Central) aims to bring together a curated list of the latest and best in funding opportunities, for businesses working in the space sector across the South East.

Accelerating Trustworthy AI

Fund Name: Accelerating trustworthy AI: Phase 1 feasibility study Deadline: Wednesday 25th January 2023

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £21 million in innovation projects across two phases of this competition. For this first phase of the competition £2 million has been allocated.

The aim of this competition is to accelerate the adoption of trusted and responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies, by reducing bottlenecks during development and deployment of such technologies.

Funding is available to support feasibility studies for the building of a consortium to evaluate suitability of system architectures, specifications, and implementation methodologies.

Inclusive and Accessible Sport

Fund Name: Inclusive and Accessible Sport Deadline: Friday 24th February 2023

Kick-Start activities explore the business opportunity and the technical viability of new applications and services that exploit one or more space assets (e.g., Satellite Communications, Satellite Navigation, Earth Observation, Human Spaceflight Technology).

This call for Kick-Start activities is dedicated to the theme ‘Inclusive and Accessible Sport’, which means that the call is open to companies that intend to develop space-enabled applications and services relating to the themes in this domain.

Space for Green Construction

Fund Name: Space for Green Construction Deadline: Tuesday 28th February 2023

The European Space Agency’s “Space for Green Construction” opportunity offers support and funding to companies looking to develop services supporting sustainability in the construction lifecycle using space-based technology and/or data. This opportunity enables companies to carry out in-depth analyses on the technical feasibility and economic viability of applications across a range of themes.

Activities arising from this Feasibility Study ITT will be co-funded at 80% by the European Space Agency for a maximum of €200K provided by ESA.

ICT and Electronic Devices Sustainability

Fund Name: ICT and Electronic Devices Sustainability Deadline: Sunday 5th March 2023

The European Space Agency is launching a competition in collaboration with Dott, Voi, and Material Focus to help tackle sustainability challenges relating to batteries, electrical products, electronic waste, and the ICT sector. ESA are offering funding and support to companies, both for business case assessment and for the development of new, space-based services. The offer includes:

  • Technical & commercial guidance
  • Access to our network and partners
  • Use of the ESA brand for your service
  • Zero-equity funding

Each selected study will receive 80% funding of up to €200K.

Successful teams will also have the opportunity to connect with Dott, Voi, and Material Focus during their feasibility study.

Horizon Europe Guarantee Extension

Fund Name: Horizon Europe Guarantee Extension (third wave) Deadline: Sunday 31st December 2023

The UK government has announced a new scheme that guarantees funding for successful applicants from the third wave of Horizon Europe grant awards, regardless of the outcome of the UK’s efforts to associate with Horizon Europe.

This funding route is for collaborative research and innovation calls under Pillars 1, 2 and EIC calls under Pillar 3. ERC and MSCA calls are being routed through the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system. N.B. KICs 2022 activities are being routed through a separate IFS competition template.
