Funding Flash: November 2022

Each month, the South Coast Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (Space South Central) aims to bring together a curated list of the latest and best in funding opportunities, for businesses working in the space sector across the South East.

Enabling Technologies Programme

Fund Name: Enabling Technologies Programme – Call Two Deadline: Monday 12th December 2022

The National Space Strategy outlines a new vision to make the UK one of the most innovative space economies. The Enabling Technologies programme contributes to the future of the sector, providing funding for projects that aim to develop and innovate technology, while establishing new academic/industrial research collaborations and feasibility studies targeting emerging disruptive technologies.

Bids are welcome from many different organisations such as industry, academia and not for profit organisations. Any submissions within the scope of space science technologies can participate in this call.

Grant funding per project is expected to range from £100k to £250k per grant.

NATEP

Fund Name: NATEP: Helping SMEs innovate in Aerospace: Autumn 2022 Deadline: Wednesday 11th January 2023

NATEP (National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme) competitions are held approximately every 6 months. UK registered SMEs can apply for a share of up to £2.5 million for industrial-led civil aerospace collaborative R&D projects.

Innovate UK Smart Grants

Fund Name: Innovate UK Smart Grants: October 2022 Deadline: Wednesday 18th January 2023

UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovations that can significantly impact the UK economy. Applications can come from any area of technology and be applied to any part of the economy, such as, but not exclusively, net zero, the arts, design and media. Proposals must be business-focused, with deliverable, realistic, adequately resourced plans to achieve return on investment, growth and market share following project completion.

Innovation and Digitalisation for the School of Tomorrow

Fund Name: Space-based Innovation and Digitalisation for the School of Tomorrow: Digital Learning for STEM Education Deadline: Sunday 15th January 2023

ESA is launching an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) inviting companies to submit their ideas for deploying and demonstrating services to respond to the need of innovation in the education sector.

ESA will bear up to 50% of the acceptable cost (up to an estimated amount of max. 1,000,000 Euro). The remainder must be financed by the Tenderer through private sector direct and/or indirect co-funding and/or by the users based on terms and conditions to be agreed upon.

Space for Tourism

Fund Name: Space for Tourism Deadline: Round 3 - Friday 30th December 2022. Round 4 - Friday 31st March 2023

ESA have issued an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for the development of space-based services enabled by innovative digital solutions to support tourism and travel industry in their transition to the new normal. They are offering funding and support to companies to develop new space-based services addressing the tourism sector. ESA are looking for projects in three areas of space: Satellite Earth Observation (SatEO) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (SatNav) Satellite Communications (SatCom) Projects will be granted zero equity funding from 50,000 to 2 million euros.

CASE

Fund Name: Commercial Applications Enabled by Space Environments Deadline: 2027

The Commercial Applications enabled by Space Environments (CASE) Open Call for Proposals supports the development of commercial services that benefit from microgravity and space environments. ESA offers funding and support to companies for business case assessment and spaceflight preparation as well as developing and piloting of new end-to-end services and products that benefit from space environments in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

ESA will fund 100% of University and Research Institute projects which have no commercial interest. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises will receive 80% of their project costs and larger scale organisations will be funded at 50%.

ESA Microgravity Student Programmes

Fund Name: Support for Student Teams selected for ESA Microgravity Student programmes Deadline: Open Until Further Notice

This call will remain open indefinitely, but any awards are subject to funds being available within the Human Exploration budget in any given financial year.

Grants will be awarded to teams for contributions to experiment build costs only, and the maximum amount awarded will be £5,000. Each project team selected by ESA may apply for funding once only.
