Space South Central Welcomes New Space Enterprise Lab at Surrey Research Park to Boost Regional Innovation and Collaboration

Caroline Fleming, Director of the Surrey Innovation District at the University of Surrey, welcomes Guildford’s MP Zöe Franklin.

Space South Central is thrilled to announce the opening of a new Space Enterprise Lab (SEL) at Surrey Research Park, part of the University of Surrey. The state-of-the-art facility was officially opened by Guildford MP Zöe Franklin at the Park’s flagship Surrey Technology Centre, reinforcing the region’s position as a leader in space innovation.

As part of the Satellite Applications Catapult’s national network of 14 Space Enterprise Labs across the UK, this new facility provides a critical platform for businesses and researchers to accelerate space innovation. The SEL will be a key driver of growth in satellite applications, non-terrestrial networks, and space communications, providing advanced technology and collaboration spaces that empower regional businesses to scale globally.

A Launchpad for Regional Innovation

Surrey Research Park, already home to a growing cluster of space-focused companies, is further cementing its role as a ‘launchpad’ for space innovation. The new SEL at the Surrey Technology Centre will provide SMEs, startups, and research teams with the tools to prototype, collaborate, and demonstrate new solutions. Featuring cutting-edge technology such as VR headsets for visualising and interacting with space data, flexible workspaces, and advanced hybrid meeting facilities, the SEL will be a vital resource for the local space ecosystem.

Dr Louise Butt, Director of Space South Central, shared her enthusiasm about the new facility:

"The Space Enterprise Lab at Surrey Technology Centre embodies our mission to empower regional innovators while anchoring the region firmly in the UK’s space economy. By providing free access to cutting-edge tools and interactive workspaces, we’re enabling SMEs and startups to prototype solutions, host hybrid demonstrations, and forge partnerships across sectors—all within the University of Surrey’s thriving Innovation District.”

With the SEL now operational, local space businesses in the region are poised to tap into national and global opportunities. By offering free access to advanced technologies and collaborative spaces, the facility will help businesses take the next step in their journey, from early-stage innovation to fully developed space technologies ready for market deployment.

The SEL also enhances Space South Central’s role in supporting regional business growth and innovation within the wider UK space sector. It connects the thriving space community in Guildford and the surrounding region with other SELs across the country, creating a robust network that strengthens the entire UK space ecosystem.

Dr Butt added:

“As part of a 14-lab national network, this facility ensures local talent can scale globally significant technologies without losing their regional roots. It’s not just a workspace; it’s a launchpad for the UK’s next-generation space ecosystem”

The opening of the Space Enterprise Lab aligns with Guildford’s growing reputation as a hub for cutting-edge research and technology. Guildford MP Zöe Franklin, who opened the facility, emphasised the importance of the new lab in supporting local innovation and economic growth,, stating:

“Guildford has long been a hub for cutting-edge research and innovation, and I am incredibly excited to support the opening of the new Space Enterprise Lab at Surrey Research Park. Facilities like this play a vital role in attracting future-focused technology businesses to our town, driving inward investment, and creating highly skilled jobs for our community. As space technologies continue to evolve, it’s essential that we provide the right support, like Surrey Research Park offers, for businesses to grow, innovate, and collaborate."

“This new Space Lab will help local companies tap into national and global opportunities, strengthening Guildford’s position as a leader in the UK and global space and technology markets. I can’t wait to see the impact this initiative will have on both our local economy and the wider space industry."

A Gateway for the UK’s Next-Generation Space Technologies

With the SEL at Surrey Research Park, Space South Central is poised to help businesses in the region scale their space technologies for both national and international markets. The new facility is designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and growth, providing a platform for businesses to showcase their cutting-edge technologies and connect with industry leaders, investors, and partners.
