Space South Central academics ranked among world’s top physicists
Academics from Space South Central’s partner universities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Surrey are among the top physicists in the world, according to research.com.
More than 50,000 physicists were researched to compile the site’s 2023 Ranking of Top 1,000 Scientists in the area of Physics, with six from Space South Central’s partner universities making the world’s top 1,000:
Professor Bob Nichol, University of Surrey
Professor Mark Sullivan, University of Southampton
Professor Daniel Thomas, University of Portsmouth
Professor Nicholas Evans, University of Southampton
Professor Claudia Maraston, University of Portsmouth
Professor Nikolay Zehludev, University of Southampton
Ranked third in the UK and thirteenth in the world in research.com’s top 1,000 physicists, Professor of Astrophysics, Bob Nichol, is also the University of Surrey’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of its Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Prior to joining Surrey, he was Director of the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG), and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and External Relations at the University of Portsmouth.
Claudia Maraston, Professor of Astrophysics at Portsmouth’s ICG, was the highest-ranking UK woman on the list. She said: “I feel accomplished to sit among the physics ‘stars’ again this year, especially as this is due for a good part to papers I have written myself or with my PhD students.
“I am particularly thrilled to be the first woman appearing in the UK top Physicists list, as this is a powerful testimonial that science has no borders and no gender.”
