Space South Central welcomes new SPINterns to the team!

We recently welcomed two new SPINterns, Jack Lynock and Tom Love, to the Space South Central team after securing extra funding from the UK Space Agency’s Space Placements in INdustry (SPIN) programme.

The scheme provides placement opportunities for those considering employment in the space sector, connecting space sector organisations who want to find the most talented students to get started in the space industry. The programme is delivered by the Satellite Applications Catapult and funded by the UK Space Agency

This year, we have tasked our SPINterns with a market research project exploring the awareness and use of space data and space technology in organisations in the following six sectors:

  • Marine and maritime

  • Logistics

  • Financial services

  • Environment/climate

  • Local government

  • Agriculture

Over the course of their eight-week placement, Jack and Tom will speak to businesses and local authorities to gain insight into how these organisations are currently using – or could use – space technology and data to benefit their operation

The research findings will be collated into a report offering recommendations for how the space industry can improve wider understanding of how space technology and data can be used to diversify into new markets and break through to other sectors.

We asked Tom and Jack to tell us a little bit about themselves and why they chose to work for Space South Central.

Tom Love

I am an MEng Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering student at the University of Southampton, and the co-founder of an engineering/business development organisation called Trinity Space Technologies. My entrepreneurial ventures stem from my fascination with how space technology can be used to create a more advanced, secure, and sustainable future for humanity.

Why did I choose this role?

I chose to apply for the Space South Central SPINternship to further explore the downstream applications of space technology and to develop skills that will allow me to better contribute to the growth of the UK space economy in the future. I believe that the UK can become a major player in the space industry, and I hope to be a part of the commercial and government developments that drive this future.

Jack Lynock

Hello, my name is Jack Lynock, I have just completed my second year at Aberystwyth University, studying Astrophysics. I am currently taking part in the fantastic Space Placements in Industry programme (SPIN for short) and am based at Space South Central inPortsmouth. My focus is on marketing space related technologies to non-space businesses.

Why did I choose this role?

Those outside the space sector see the space sector as “upstream applications”, i.e. the production and launch of space hardware, like satellites and rockets. However, that is far from the entirety of what space technology covers; the space sector enables the numerous “downstream applications” such as, but not limited to, position, navigation and timing (PNT), earth observation (EO) and communications, yet few appreciate how beneficial these technologies are to our lives.

At Space-Comm 2023 in Farnborough, I heard a keynote speaker mention that the space sector needs to venture out to other industries and show the true capabilities of the space sector. This SPIN role gives me a fantastic opportunity to take up that challenge.

Many other Space South Central companies have also secured a SPINtern or two including, Orange Tree Ltd, University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, Ohmspace, KISPE Space Systems, Bryce Space and Technology, Airbus, All Space, Ultima Forma and Horizon Technologies Space.

If you are a UK company in any of the mentioned sectors and would like to contribute to Tom and Jack's research, please contact us at info@spacesouthcentral.com
